Press/Gallery: Elizabeth Olsen Talks Robert Downey Jr, Skipping the Oscars, and Moving to England

Her sisters might make the headlines, but Elizabeth Olsen prefers to fly under the radar.

THE SUNDAY TIMES STYLE – It’s cold in Hollywood. On a backlot in Studio City that has more in common with an Essex construction site, I’m shivering in a temporary office, waiting for a gofer who I’m told will take me to Elizabeth Olsen. I watch the back of a tall brunette in a backwards baseball cap and Timberlands and contemplate where Olsen could possibly be in all this prosaic functionality. Ensconced, I suspect, in one of those “better” places reserved for cast, sipping something hot with almond milk. Only when the runner turns around to approach me… She is Elizabeth Olsen. “I’d love to say I drink coffee with almond milk,” she says, her voice low, wry and husky, “but it tastes f****** disgusting.”

On the Hollywood behavioural spectrum, the 29-year-old Olsen — Lizzie to those who know her — is at the end marked “very unshowy”. “When I get photographed, it’s never leaving a cool restaurant,” she says drily. “I’m always at the grocery store buying toilet paper.” This is all the more impressive given her lineage: her older sisters are twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, 31, the child TV stars turned fashion designers of The Row — their diffusion line, Elizabeth and James, is named after her and her brother. I’ve been warned not to talk too much about her sisters, but when I do, Olsen gets it: “Of course people are curious. When you have a public figure in your family, people forget that you have, like, 800 other members of it.” She has made occasional appearances on the brand’s front row, as well as at Miu Miu — Mrs Prada gave her the seal of approval when she cast Olsen for an ad campaign in 2014, a signal that she was the Chloë Sevigny-like girl of the moment. More recently, she has starred in H&M’s SS18 campaign film dancing the tango with Winona Ryder.

In general, however, the younger Olsen has eschewed all Hollywood peacockery. In fact, in the seven years since her breakthrough lead as the escapee from an abusive cult in Martha Marcy May Marlene, which led to a Bafta rising-star nomination and a quiet reputation for dark indie films, the only scandalous headline she’s had is (and I paraphrase): “Elizabeth Olsen is so low-key.” “‘She’s high-strung but low-key!’” she drawls, nailing the sarcasm. “‘She has a hundred neuroses, but so low-key.’”

She takes me to her new “office”, a prefab that resembles a halfway house, empty but for a hefty brown sofa that looks like vintage DFS; she curls up on it cupping a grim-looking takeaway tea. From here she will be executive producing and starring in a 10-part dramedy about a grieving widow called Sorry for Your Loss, for Facebook’s new streaming platform, Watch. As this is a #MeToo world, the team have just watched a video on harassment in the workplace and listened to a talk by a lawyer. “I was like, ‘Wow, this is really f****** thorough.’ Apparently even if someone overhears something really inappropriate that’s still considered harassment. Even though it’s not told to them directly. I was, like, ‘This is crazy shit.’”

Olsen admits she is one of the least likely people to collaborate with a social-media company: “I told them, ‘I’m not gonna create a Facebook page for my character.’” Until recently she was a confirmed iPhobe, but she reluctantly joined Instagram two years ago and now has 1.1m followers, which she finds amusing: “I don’t understand the acronyms, but I figured that #WCW was Woman Crush Wednesday.” She posted a picture of her “inspiration”, former jailbird Martha Stewart. “All I want to do is be a homemaker. I started baking bread in January,” she declares rather maniacally. “I want to make my own yeast next.”

Press: This Movie Has Everything: Gentle Ed Harris, Edgy Jason Sudeikis & Wise Elizabeth Olsen

REFINERY 29: “Happiness is bullshit.” That’s how the trailer for upcoming Netflix film Kodachrome starts, but don’t let that throw you off. What follows is a charming, funny, and warm preview into the movie directed by Mark Raso and starring Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris, and Elizabeth Olsen.

Sudeikis plays Matt, a son who hasn’t spoken to his photographer father (Harris) in over a decade, until Zoe (Olsen) shows up on his doorstep asking him to drive his father to Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas, the only place in the world that still develops Kodachrome film (this is true, and it has a wonderfully retro website complete with a t-shirt for purchase).

“He’s dying,” Zoe tells him, but Matt has his own problems. He’s a struggling A&R executive at Spitting Devil Records who will lose his job unless he manages to poach a big band from Sony. The two storylines come together, according to Billboard, when Matt realizes the band he’s after is touring along the very route he, his father, and Zoe must take to Kansas. What ensues is your classic road trip story with an excellent soundtrack.

Through the trip, the father and son grapple with their broken relationship, while Matt and Zoe are on the brink of a new one. In the end, it’s a story about life, and the different ways we choose to treasure it.

“Take pictures, they stop time,” Ben (Harris) says. “Commit moments to eternity.”

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will arrive on Netflix on April 20. You can watch the full trailer for Kodachrome below:

Press: Elizabeth Olsen Calls Out Empire Magazine for Photoshopping Her Face on Cover

Olsen appears alongside her “Avengers: Infinity War” co-stars on the latest Empire cover, although you’ll most likely have trouble recognizing her.

INDIEWIRE – UPDATE (March 22): Empire has given the following statement to Newsweek: “Empire magazine did not make any alteration to the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ artwork supplied to them by Disney and Marvel Studios, that appears on the May 2018 cover.”

Earlier: Elizabeth Olsen has a question to ask Empire Magazine: “Does this look like me?” The actress appears alongside her “Avengers: Infinity War” co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Danai Gurira, and Dave Bautista on one of the publication’s new covers, but her face appears so photoshopped that you might not even recognize Olsen as her character Scarlet Witch. Olsen took to Instagram to call out the publication.

The image is found on one of six new Empire covers celebrating the release of the Marvel tentpole and a decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Olsen reprises her role as Scarlet Witch, which she first played back in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The character is expected to be a major presence in “Infinity War” given her relationship with Vision, who is in possession of the Mind Stone. Thanos will no doubt be targeting Vision and Scarlet Witch.

The actress was hardly the only one who noticed Empire’s egregious photoshopping. Fans took to social media in shock and confusion over the cover. IndieWire has reached out to Olsen’s representatives for comment.

Nonetheless I’ve loaded the Empire scans into the gallery!

Press: H&M Spring Collection – Take the lead with Winona Ryder and Elizabeth Olsen

The iconic actresses celebrate female empowerment and friendship with an epic dance off.

H&M – It’s finally here! Shot in Buenos Aires, Argentina, H&M’s Spring fashion campaign film sees actress Elizabeth Olsen dance out from a local café and into the streets. There, she’s joined by a cast of strong women – including top models Imaan Hammam, Andreea Diaconu and Anna Ewers – all wearing flowing dresses, wide-leg trousers, embroidered jeans and sophisticated blouses while dancing through the city.

“It was such a thrill to be in Buenos Aires for the H&M Spring campaign, and more importantly, to be surrounded by such a wonderful cast of strong women. The entire experience was incredibly inspiring,” says Elizabeth Olsen.

After dancing through Buenos Aires, Elizabeth Olsen inevitably finds her way back to the café, where she’s joined by one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses.

“I loved the way that the campaign really celebrated women in a very authentic way. I found that to be really refreshing and much needed right now in this culture. They are celebrating themselves and each other,” says Winona Ryder.
