Harpers’ BAZAAR (hereinafter referred to as HB): Are you born with a love for the camera, or have you mastered this skill over time? Do you have any personal tips when facing the camera?
Elizabeth Olsen (hereinafter referred to as EO): I have loved performing in front of audiences since I was a child. When facing the audience directly, I can feel the immediate feedback and learn how to tell stories within the constraints of the stage. But when making a film, you need to transport the audience into the intimacy of the camera, which requires a different approach to acting. I’m definitely not as naturally drawn to the camera as I am to the viewer, but I’m always learning how to better utilize the lens to tell a story, whether that’s taking up a small amount of space in a close-up or a wide shot.
HB: Your acting journey began at a very young age. Did you realize then that acting was the path you wanted to take?
EO: I actually didn’t start my acting career until I was 19 when I was an understudy in an Off-Broadway play in New York. But dance and theater have been part of my life since the beginning. Even if I’m not doing it for an audience, I’m always cosplaying with friends or mostly by myself. I’m sure all kids do it, I just never stopped and never wanted to.
HB: Please share about the works you are currently working on or about to start.
EO: I’m about to see last year’s “Assessment,” directed by Fleur Fortuné, with Alicia Vikander and Himesh Patel, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I can’t wait to share it with audiences. Then I finished this summer a beautiful and funny film called Eternity directed by David Freyne with a great cast. I’m really looking forward to both of these works. And of course, I can’t wait for the world to see His Three Daughters, a film that will be released on Netflix this year and was made out of a pure love of filming and a spirit of collaboration.
HB: When you’re not shooting, do you follow a specific workout, or do you prefer to relax?
EO: I usually work in my free time from shooting. Lots of reading, feedback, meetings, but also developing new work. So it’s basically continuous work, but the hours are much shorter than a shoot day, and there’s a lot of joy that comes from working and collaborating.
HB: You have acted in everything from independent films to major Marvel movies. How do you choose which ones you want to be involved in? What are the key elements that attract you to a certain role? Is it the people involved or the script itself?
EO: I look at multiple elements: the script (do I understand how to handle the character and can my point of view serve the story), and the creative people involved (mostly the director, if I don’t know their work, I look at do they have the right producers backing them early in their career), then I try to see if my tastes match theirs.
HB: Hollywood is very competitive. What’s the toughest situation you’ve ever faced as an actor?
EO: I think there were a lot of challenges, from fighting for the vulnerability of the character to dealing with personality conflicts throughout, but I loved them. If you don’t overcome the difficulties, there will be no reward.
HB: Who has been your biggest support in your career?
EO: I think the people behind the scenes have had the biggest impact on my career: agents, managers, publicists, financial managers, lawyers. These are the people I talk to every day, they care about my personal life and my work life, and they are definitely the biggest support.
HB: What advice would you give to newbies aspiring to succeed in their acting careers?
EO: My advice is to never suppress what makes you unique. It doesn’t have to be “loud.” This uniqueness can even be your shyness. Authenticity is what audiences respond to.
HB: You are quietly involved in many charitable activities. What are the social issues you are most concerned about right now?
EO: Women’s reproductive rights (Reproductive Rights) are something I will never take for granted and I hope to achieve more.
HB: Finally, have you ever been to Taiwan? What do you want to say to Taiwanese fans?
EO: I haven’t visited Taiwan yet, but would very much like to. In modern times, being able to travel around the world and experience different cultures is the greatest privilege that contemporary people have.
