Hero Registration Act, a law that limits a hero's actions. This results in a division in The Avengers. Iron Man stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed, but Captain America feels that saving the world is daring enough and that they cannot rely on the government to protect the world. This escalates into an all-out war between Team Iron Man (Iron Man, Black Panther, Vision, Black Widow, War Machine, and Spider-Man) and Team Captain America (Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and Ant Man) while a new villain emerges.

FILMING

Principal photography began on April 27, 2015, in Fayette County, Georgia, at Pinewood Atlanta Studios, under the working title Sputnik. Other filming locations in the Atlanta metropolitan area included the Buckhead district of Atlanta; the Peachtree Christian Church in Midtown Atlanta; Downtown Atlanta, including an area near Philips Arena known as The Gulch, which served as the market in Lagos; Norcross, Georgia; Porsche’s headquarters in Atlanta at Aerotropolis Atlanta, which served as the Avengers’ headquarters in the film; and the Atlanta Civic Center, which served as the IFID (Institute for Infectious Diseases) laboratory in Lagos; the latter’s interiors doubled as MIT, and a third part was used for a Berlin location.

After the reveal of the film’s full cast, many outlets and fans began referring to the film as “Avengers 2.5 “, given the variety and ensemble nature of the cast, usually reserved for the Avengers films, and the fact that the film no longer felt like a Captain America-centric one, as with The Winter Soldier. In response to this, Feige said, “What’s fun about Civil War though is, as you know from the comics, it’s a very simple story. And it really has to be, to accommodate that many players. It’s very much a Captain America movie and it’s very much a sequel to the Winter Soldier in ways I don’t think people [will expect]…. It’s a very simple structure that allows you to have these amazing character interactions in a way that I don’t think becomes overwhelming.”

By the end of June, filming reached the halfway mark, with production moving to Germany in early August. Filming locations in Germany included the Olympic Stadium in Berlin,[147] and the Leipzig/Halle Airport in Schkeuditz. Additional filming also took place in Puerto Rico and Norway, and was scheduled to in Iceland. Principal photography wrapped on August 22, 2015.

Captain America: Civil War was the first film to use IMAX’s digital 2D cameras, made in partnership with Arri, which was a customized version of the Arri Alexa 65.

PRODUCTION STILLS

TRIVIA(Related to Elizabeth or whole movie/cast only)

  • The film coincides with the 75th anniversary of Captain America. 2016 also marks the 10th anniversary of the original Civil War comic book and Black Panther’s 50th anniversary.
  • This was the longest Marvel film, at two hours and twenty-seven minutes, until “Infinity War” (2 hours 35 mins).
  • This movie marks the beginning of Phase Three in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is the thirteenth film overall.
  • (at around 1h 24 mins) Wanda (Scarlet Witch) can disable the Vision, because she received her powers from the mind stone. One of Vision’s powers, is to manipulate his body density, so he can become phantasmal, or stronger than diamonds. She made him so dense, that he became too heavy to move, and fell through the floor.
  • A large part of the film is set in Romania, where Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. Winter Soldier, was born.
  • In Spain, the film was titled “Capitán América: Civil War”. The decision for not translating the subtitle “Civil War” as “Guerra Civil” was an attempt to avoid links or comparisons with the Spanish Civil War (plainly named in the country as “Guerra Civil”), which was fought between July 17, 1936 and April 1, 1939.
  • (at around 1h 30 mins) Tony Stark warns Captain America’s side that if they don’t surrender to Stark, some “J.S.O.C.” guys will come after them instead. This is a reference to the U.S. Military’s Joint Special Operations Command. J.S.O.C. oversees elite units like the U.S. Navy’s S.E.A.L. Team Six, the U.S. Air Force’s 24th Special Tactics Squadron, and the U.S. Army’s Delta Force and 75th Ranger Regiment.
  • he working title that was used to create the film was “Sputnik”. In the comics, “Sputnik” used to trigger the Winter Soldier’s mind control, much like the sequence, “Longing, Rusted, Furnace, Daybreak, Seventeen, Benign, Nine, Homecoming, One, Freight Car”, for his cinematic counterpart.
  • Filming started on May 7, 2015, in Atlanta, Georgia. The cast was working in ninety degree Fahrenheit (thirty-two degree Celcius) weather in costume.
  • This is the fourth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to gross one billion dollars.
  • According to the Russo brothers, the title for this movie has been in existence for over a decade.
  • This is the fourth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature a pre-Marvel Studios logo “cold open” scene. The first was Iron Man 3 (2013), the second was Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and the third was Ant-Man (2015).
  • Vision, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, and Scarlet Witch weren’t part of the original comic book storyline. The first three were dead at the time, while Wanda was missing and insane.
  • With a budget of two hundred fifty million dollars, this movie is the seventh-most expensive superhero film ever made, after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) (four hundred ten million dollars), Spider-Man 3 (2007) (three hundred fifty million dollars), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) (three hundred sixteen million dollars), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) (three hundred million dollars), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) (two hundred ninety-three million dollars), and Superman Returns (2006) (two hundred seventy million dollars).
  • On October 13, 2014, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be joining the cast of this film, and that it would follow the Civil War storyline.
  • The first film to be shot with the Alexa IMAX camera, featuring fifteen minutes of footage. The Alexa IMAX camera was a collaborative development between Arri and IMAX, in customizing the Alexa 65 6.5k camera to facilitate viewings in IMAX theatres, without overhauling equipment.
  • Every phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starts with a film that features Tony Stark as at least one of the main characters. Phase One started with Iron Man (2008), Phase Two started with Iron Man 3 (2013), and Phase Three started with this movie.
  • Although Civil War is the third Captain America movie, the film is technically, but unofficially the third Avengers film. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) is the official third Avengers film.
  • This is the only MCU entry in Phase 3 to be primarily Filmed in Panavision (anamorphic).
  • The film takes place in 1991 and 2016.

Spoilers
The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

  • The film shows a bond beginning to form between Scarlet Witch and Vision, who were actually married for a while in the comics.
  • By the end of the movie, the Avengers logo on Captain America’s arm is no longer there, representing the Avengers are no longer his.
  • In the comics, while Spider-Man started off on Iron Man’s side, he later shifted over to Captain America’s side after learning that the Pro-Registration Side was imprisoning the captured unregistered heroes in a prison built in another dimension known as the “Negative Zone”, against their will, without due process (as it is technically not on American soil) until they agreed to register. In the film, he fights on Iron Man’s side, before being sent home by Iron Man after the battle at the airport in Germany.
  • Although she is never mentioned as a mutant (Fox owned the term rights at that time), Scarlet Witch is the only mutant between the Avengers in the movie, and she is seeing with a collar when locked in Raft Prision, which can be a reference to the X-Gene Inhibitor Collar, created in the comics by Bolivar Trask to suppress mutant powers. The collar has been featured before in X-2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014).
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016) is considered to be Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) of the Captain America trilogy (2011, 2014, 2016). A vengeful Zemo causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man and tears The Avengers apart and has causes a rift between Captain America and Iron man and exposes the truth behind the death of Tony Stark’s parents to manipulate and force Captain America and Iron Man to turn on and fight each other.
  • An “avenger” is a person who seeks revenge upon those who have wronged themselves or others. Iron Man and Black Panther both seek revenge upon The Winter Soldier. Winter Soldier is framed for the murder of Black Panther’s father, and Winter Soldier assassinated Iron Man’s parents at the order of HYDRA. Iron Man is a member of The Avengers.

QUOTES

Vision: [straining] If you do this, they will never stop being afraid of you.
Wanda Maximoff: I can’t control their fear. Only my own.

Vision: A pinch of paprika… A pinch…
Wanda Maximoff: Is that Paprikash?
Vision: I thought it might lift your spirits.
Wanda Maximoff: [Tastes Vision’s cooking] Spirits lifted.
Vision: In my defense, I haven’t actually eaten anything before, so… please… Wanda?
Wanda Maximoff: Hmm?
Vision: No one dislikes you.
Wanda Maximoff: [Chuckles] Thanks.
Vision: Oh you’re welcome. No. It’s ah… involuntary response in their amygdala that can’t help but being afraid of you.
Wanda Maximoff: Are you?
Vision: My amygdala is synthetic, so…
Wanda Maximoff: [laugh] … I used to think of myself one way. But after this
[swirling fingers with magic] Wanda Maximoff: . I am something else. And still me, I think. But that’s not what everyone else sees.
Vision: Do you know, I don’t know what this is
[point at mind gem on his forehead] Vision: . Not really. I know it’s not of this world. But it powered Loki staff, gave you your abilities. But its true nature is a mystery. And yet, it is part of me.
Wanda Maximoff: Are you afraid of it?
Vision: I wish to understand it. The more I do the less it controls me. One day, who knows, I may even control it.
Wanda Maximoff: [Back at Vision’s cooking] I don’t know what’s in this but it’s not paprika. I’m gonna go to the store i’ll be back in 20 minutes.
Vision: Alternatively, we could order a pizza?
Wanda Maximoff: Vision, are you not letting me leave?
Vision: …It is a question of safety.
Wanda Maximoff: I can protect myself.
Vision: Not yours. Mr. Stark would like to avoid the possibility of another public incident. Until the Accords are a more secured foundation.
Wanda Maximoff: …And what do you want?
Vision: For people to see you… as I do.

Wanda Maximoff: What about the gas?
Steve Rogers: Get it out.
