Press: ‘I don’t want superhero films to rip up my indie roots’

EVENING STANDARD – Wind River actress Elizabeth Olsen has built up her reputation working on a string of acclaimed indie films.

But the star is worried that becoming too much of a household name could make her on-screen characters less believable.

The 29-year-old even said she had to think twice about joining the cast of the blockbuster Avengers movies as Scarlet Witch.

She told A List: “I did and I still do [have concerns]. I still think, ‘Uh! Who would I have worked with if I hadn’t done a superhero movie?’

“And then you’re like, ‘Ah forget it’. It’s a woulda shoulda coulda kind of thing.

“I did think about [the difference] because it’s an association — an image thing — and you still want to be taken seriously for other kinds of story-telling.

“You also don’t want to get bigger than your characters ever — there are some actors that are hard to watch because you think of them as [a famous character]… and so you’re like, ‘I can’t think of you as this person who’s a janitor…’ ”

Olsen’s recent credits include Ingrid Goes West and the Hank Williams biopic I Saw The Light, opposite Tom Hiddleston, and she is currently shooting comedy drama series Sorry For Your Loss for Facebook’s new on-demand service.

The younger sister of fashion designer twins and former child stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, she made her breakthrough in the thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene, about a woman returned to her family from a cult.

Olsen, below, returns to the Marvel universe for the fourth time in Avengers: Infinity War, having first played the role in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

She said: “The thing I love about Scarlet is it’s not about matching the men’s strength. She is a character that’s very emotional — and that’s OK. There are aspects of being a woman that should be embraced — it’s not just about fighting and putting on pants.”

Olsen says she has her own action figure of Scarlet at home: “I don’t even want it out — it just needs to be in a bin in a cupboard, so when I have children one day, they’ll be like, ‘This is so weird!’”

Avengers: Infinity War is in cinemas on April 26
