Press: Here’s How Elizabeth Olsen Collaborated With Writer Michael Waldron To Come Up With Wanda’s Story In “Doctor Strange 2”

Elizabeth Olsen wrapped WandaVision only two days before jumping into Multiverse of Madness.

There are some MASSIVE spoilers ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

BUZZFEED:Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently the latest Marvel project to take over the box office, as fans flock to see this Sam Raimi–directed movie. And while it is technically the second solo Doctor Strange movie, it’s hard to deny how important Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) is in the film.

I mean, let’s be honest, it really could’ve been called Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch in the Multiverse of Madness.

And while this MCU movie has so many storylines, Wanda Maximoff’s transformation into the Scarlet Witch is arguably the biggest and one of the most important, especially because the last Marvel project we all saw Wanda in was WandaVision.

In fact, Elizabeth Olsen notably wrapped WandaVision and then flew to London two days later to start filming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Meaning she played Wanda Maximoff nonstop for nearly two years.

So, in order to ensure that Wanda’s storylines in Multiverse of Madness made sense, writer Michael Waldron said he collaborated a lot with Elizabeth, who has “total ownership over Wanda and the Scarlet Witch.”

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Michael discussed how working alongside Elizabeth and writing for her was one of his favorite things about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and how her “very specific” notes on Wanda’s arc helped a ton.

Michael explained, “Lizzie’s been playing Wanda a lot longer than I’ve been writing her, and she was coming right off of WandaVision, literally wrapping filming on that like a few days before, so she was so in tune with where Wanda’s story was. I really listened to her and tried to make sure that we weren’t doing anything out of step with where she thought the character was on her journey.”

“To write for Lizzie Olsen is such a pleasure. She’s become a great pal of mine. Lizzie’s really just so great to collaborate with. She was very specific with her notes. There’s so many moving parts that go into all of this, and she helped a lot.”

In terms of specific elements Elizabeth helped craft, Michael said she was instrumental in fleshing out Wanda’s ideas about being “reasonable” and calling out Doctor Strange for his actions that make him a hero but would make her a villain.

“Everything Wanda’s talking about in the movie about being reasonable, you know, that was something that I felt like I really worked on with Lizzie to get it. It’s like, after reading the Darkhold and after understanding her place and who she is supposed to be, Wanda really has an expanded notion of her place in the universe and who she’s meant to be. And yet, all she really wants is to just go eat ice cream with her children.”

Michael continued, saying, “So, it was always making sure that Wanda has a reasonable, defensible point of view every step of the way, as she’s calling out hypocrisy from Strange and others.”

“To Lizzie’s credit, she was such an amazing sport. She came in and we’re obviously taking a big swing making the character the main villain. She’s doing a lot of bad stuff in this movie. We worked with Lizzie to try and make sure there was justification for that built in.”

Michael said, aside from the collaboration, it was also amazing to watch Lizzie deliver a “really physically grueling performance on top of the emotional stuff too.”

“Just the fact that she had to shoot covered in oil, mud, and water. It was awesome to watch Lizzie go and just be an action hero, or action villain rather, through and through. Wanda’s the hero of her own story in this one, and I’m proud of how Lizzie and I collaborated on it and brought her to life.”

I love that after almost eight years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Elizabeth Olsen has become such an important part of Wanda Maximoff’s journey. You can tell how much she cares about the character, and it just makes me love her even more.
