FILMING

Principal photography began on July 11, 2016 in Los Angeles and wrapped August 12, 2016 in Joshua Tree, California.

 

RELEASE

The film premiered in competition at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. It was released in limited theaters in the United States on August 11, 2017 by Neon, grossing $3 million. The film received positive reviews, with many praising the script, dark themes, humor, and performances.

TRIVIA

  • Bill Murray is listed in the Very Special Thanks section of the credits. In the commentary, Aubrey Plaza says that while she and Murray were filming _A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012)_, he gave her his dark blue sweater when she became ill. She wears it in the bank scene and the tropical restaurant scene.
  • The production was delayed by some setbacks when director Matt Spicer accidentally walked through a sliding glass door after yelling “cut” and gaffers had to remove fragments of glass from his arm with duct tape. At one point the production had to evacuate their location due to the raging Santa Clarita brush fires in L.A. county.
  • This will be O’Shea Jackson Jr. ‘s second movie ever; his first was playing his father in Straight Outta Compton (2015).
  • The short film “Hi Stranger (2016)” was attached to this film in the United States/Canada by distributor Neon.
  • Like his character in the film, Wyatt Russell does not participate in social media at all.
  • Pom Klementieff and Elizabeth Olsen have worked together in Oldboy (2013) and will work together again for Avengers: Infinity War (2018).
