Press/Gallery: Women of Action: Meet the Stunt Performers Who Help Stars Kick Ass

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – As Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen doesn’t have a mystical hammer or state-of-the-art suit. Instead, she flings bolts of energy at bad guys while bending and contorting like a Martha Graham dancer. But she still needs a stuntwoman for those tricky moments like when she gets thrown through a restaurant window.

“I love fighting, and I love wrecking through things,” says C.C. Ice, the stuntwoman who got the job. “So if you want to throw me through that door, that’s where I’m going.”

Growing up in a small town in Missouri, one of 13 kids, Ice, 38, was exposed to stunts at a very early age, mostly at the insistence of her five older brothers. “Somebody would have an idea like, ‘Hey let’s jump down the staircase using a trash bag as a parachute. C.C.’s the smallest, let’s have her try it!'” she recalls. By way of a gig as a magician’s assistant (where she learned about blades, fire and how to fall through trap doors without getting hurt), she made her way from Missouri to the East Coast and then to Los Angeles in 2007, just in time for the writers strike. She remembers: “I was like, ‘I’m here!’ and they were like, ‘We’re on strike!’”

Ice found steady pay as a production assistant while training for stunt work on the side. She received her SAG card as a stunt performer in 2011, and moved to Atlanta, following Hollywood productions that were migrating to Georgia to take advantage of film tax breaks. That’s where she ended up landing the gig doing utility stunts on Captain America: Civil War, after which she was paired with Olsen on Avengers: Infinity War, beginning with six months of stunt prep.

So far, the biggest challenge for both actress and double hasn’t been smashing through windows — it’s been pinning down the character’s strange, twisted action moves. Olsen remembers director Joss Whedon visually demonstrating. “He would show us his knees bending lots of weird ways and his fingers going crazy,” recalls the 29-year-old actress, who worked with choreographer Jennifer White on Scarlet’s moves in Age of Ultron. “We were having a really hard time finding people who understood the physical language,” says Olsen. “C.C. elevated us.”

Olsen and Ice’s work will next be seen in the upcoming Avengers film, and, with the plot being kept under lock and key, Scarlet Witch’s fate remains unknown. But, according to Olsen, Ice wil be able to handle it all. “The crazy thing to me about C.C. is she can do anything you ask her to do,” says the actress. “I’ve talked about [her] to so many people.” On a recent set, another actress was recommending her stuntwoman to Olsen. “I was just like, ‘Girl, you don’t even know my stunt person. Let me know if you need a stunt person!’”

Press: An Emotional ‘Sorry for Your Loss’ Finale Sees Leigh Facing Her Fears

COLLIDER – Once you get past the fact that one of the best shows of the year is on Facebook — yes Facebook! — you’ll know that Sorry for Your Loss is indeed worth it. The series follows Leigh Shaw (Elizabeth Olsen), whose husband Matt (Mamoudou Athie) died suddenly three months before we meet her. The first season chronicles the following two months over ten half-hour episodes, as Leigh is still coming to terms with her life without Matt. But from the onset, Sorry for Your Loss is at heart a family drama that includes Leigh’s adopted sister Jules (Kelly Marie Tran), a recovering alcoholic, and their mother Amy (Janet McTeer), who owns a fitness studio where both her daughters work. The series also tracks Leigh’s complicated relationship with Matt’s brother Danny (Jovan Adepo), the only person who really understands the depth of her loss, and her friendships that have suffered in the wake of such a devastating event. It’s a beautiful series that never gets too dark, and yet it doesn’t shy away from frank and difficult discussions about relationships, depression, and grappling with death.

So go watch it! Or finish it. For now, spoilers below.

Press/Video: “Sorry for Your Loss” at TIFF 2018 – Cast Interview and Review

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: Facebook Watch gets into the quality TV game with a dramatic exploration of grieving and memory starring Elizabeth Olsen, Janet McTeer and Kelly Marie Tran.

In an all-too-glutted landscape of scripted television, the path to programming legitimacy can take a while. It’s one thing to throw a show or two on your cable network or digital platform. It isn’t always the same thing to launch a show that cuts through the clutter and demands the attention of critics and viewers alike.

AMC did it fast with Mad Men. Netflix did it fast with House of Cards. On the other hand, look at Paramount Network and its tough run before Yellowstone. Or look at the number of shows Crackle produces that I could list to probably blank stares.

As an overworked TV critic writing for an overloaded TV-watching audience, it’s my sad duty or my pleasure to report that with Sorry for Your Loss, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend and online Sept. 18, Facebook Watch is officially on the board as a potential destination for quality content.

That’s not to malign the reality shows starring Tom Brady and Lonzo Ball or something called Sacred Lies that I keep meaning to watch more of. It also isn’t to say that Sorry for Your Loss is flawless, top-tier television. It’s just the first Facebook Watch show to make me go, “OK, if this were on Showtime or Amazon, this might be in Emmy conversations.”

The series, created by Kit Steinkellner, has a strong pedigree, with Switched at Birth veteran Lizzy Weiss serving as showrunner and James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) directing early installments.

Press/Gallery: Kate Spade Fashion Show

ET ONLINE – Kate Spade New York brightened up New York Fashion Week with the brand’s first-ever runway show on Friday.

Debuting new creative director Nicola Glass’ designs, the line, which previously only stuck to presentations, sent colorful wares and whimsical accessories down the pink runway, which paid a special tribute to the late designer who died in June. Spade sold the company in 2006 and stepped down from the brand completely in 2007, but her name continued to remain.

“I feel that all the work I do with the team is a legacy to her because it’s still her name,” Glass told ET’s Kristen Gill. “We were listening to a lot of the tributes after Kate’s passing and one of the phrases that really kept resonating was she left a little bit of sparkle wherever she went and we wanted to use that in a way to tribute her today, so there’s an element of sparkle throughout the collection — whether it’s a touch in the makeup or there’s a line in the middle of the runway that’s this beautiful pink carpet that is a glitter line, so that’s one of the ways were tributing to her.”

Press: Five Superhero Actors Saving the World from Poverty

BORGEN – From their declaration of support to the creation of their own organizations, celebrities are using their influence to generate help for those affected by global poverty. These five superhero actors fight injustice beyond the movie set and prove that saving the world from poverty is not just a fictional story.

Elizabeth Olsen Gets Involved in Sustainable Community Development

Elizabeth Olsen’s character, Scarlet Witch, was coerced into working with villains but later joined the Avengers. Similarly, Olsen discovered her call to philanthropy in the real world during a trip to Nicaragua. When a yoga retreat got cancelled, she decided to volunteer in San Juan del Sur, when she and numerous local citizens repaired desks, updated athletic equipment and renovated latrines. All this was done through the Latitude Project, which encourages sustainability and community participation. Also, they collaborate with local businesses to maximize the amount of resources allocated to restoration projects. Olsen told InStyle that the Latitude Project has no overhead costs, so people can see their donations go directly to those in need.

Press: Inside the surprisingly low-key world of a Marvel superhero

The actress opens up about ignoring Hollywood norms and why she’ll never enjoy Instagram

HARPERS BAZAAR – Marvel films don’t often go hand in hand with low-key actresses. Big Hollywood blockbusters tend to act as magnets for showy, big-time names and the kind of stars who like to eat out at flashy restaurants amid wails of dwindling privacy. Elizabeth Olsen is an anomaly to the formula.

For the past three years, the LA-based actress has played Scarlet Witch in the Avengers franchise, a superhero who can alter both probability and reality. Next week sees the culmination of the Marvel film series – the release of Avengers: Infinity War, which brings the giant superhero ensemble together. The cast is huge and the hype is massive, and yet Elizabeth Olsen would rather be at home with her friends putting her newfound break-making skills to the test.

“If I could do whatever I wanted for the day, I’d start with going to the gym or doing some sort of workout, then I’d go to the grocery store because my favourite thing to do is grocery shop,” she says. “The night before I would have prepped bread, like dough, then the next day I’d bake bread and create a delicious meal, sit outside in the sun, eat delicious food all day with people I love.”

It sounds like every clichéd LA wellness trend wrapped up in one, the type of day you’ve seen over and again on influencer Instagram pages. But none of it is is designed to be broadcast – Olsen isn’t keen on social media (in fact, one of her latest films, Ingrid Goes West explored the dark ridiculousness of Instagram); she only recently joined and, to her horror, has already amassed 1.1 million followers.

Press: This Movie Has Everything: Gentle Ed Harris, Edgy Jason Sudeikis & Wise Elizabeth Olsen

REFINERY 29: “Happiness is bullshit.” That’s how the trailer for upcoming Netflix film Kodachrome starts, but don’t let that throw you off. What follows is a charming, funny, and warm preview into the movie directed by Mark Raso and starring Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris, and Elizabeth Olsen.

Sudeikis plays Matt, a son who hasn’t spoken to his photographer father (Harris) in over a decade, until Zoe (Olsen) shows up on his doorstep asking him to drive his father to Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas, the only place in the world that still develops Kodachrome film (this is true, and it has a wonderfully retro website complete with a t-shirt for purchase).

“He’s dying,” Zoe tells him, but Matt has his own problems. He’s a struggling A&R executive at Spitting Devil Records who will lose his job unless he manages to poach a big band from Sony. The two storylines come together, according to Billboard, when Matt realizes the band he’s after is touring along the very route he, his father, and Zoe must take to Kansas. What ensues is your classic road trip story with an excellent soundtrack.

Through the trip, the father and son grapple with their broken relationship, while Matt and Zoe are on the brink of a new one. In the end, it’s a story about life, and the different ways we choose to treasure it.

“Take pictures, they stop time,” Ben (Harris) says. “Commit moments to eternity.”

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will arrive on Netflix on April 20. You can watch the full trailer for Kodachrome below:

Press: Elizabeth Olsen Calls Out Empire Magazine for Photoshopping Her Face on Cover

Olsen appears alongside her “Avengers: Infinity War” co-stars on the latest Empire cover, although you’ll most likely have trouble recognizing her.

INDIEWIRE – UPDATE (March 22): Empire has given the following statement to Newsweek: “Empire magazine did not make any alteration to the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ artwork supplied to them by Disney and Marvel Studios, that appears on the May 2018 cover.”

Earlier: Elizabeth Olsen has a question to ask Empire Magazine: “Does this look like me?” The actress appears alongside her “Avengers: Infinity War” co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Danai Gurira, and Dave Bautista on one of the publication’s new covers, but her face appears so photoshopped that you might not even recognize Olsen as her character Scarlet Witch. Olsen took to Instagram to call out the publication.

The image is found on one of six new Empire covers celebrating the release of the Marvel tentpole and a decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Olsen reprises her role as Scarlet Witch, which she first played back in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The character is expected to be a major presence in “Infinity War” given her relationship with Vision, who is in possession of the Mind Stone. Thanos will no doubt be targeting Vision and Scarlet Witch.

The actress was hardly the only one who noticed Empire’s egregious photoshopping. Fans took to social media in shock and confusion over the cover. IndieWire has reached out to Olsen’s representatives for comment.

Nonetheless I’ve loaded the Empire scans into the gallery!
