Press: Everything we know about the 2023 Oscars — including celebrity presenters, performances, pre-shows, and more

Pedro Pascal, Harrison Ford, Halle Berry, and Elizabeth Olsen are just some of the stars who will present at Sunday’s ceremony.

Hollywood’s biggest night of the year is almost here.

The 2023 Oscars are just around the corner, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a few changes to the program following its controversial 2022 broadcast. This time, all 23 categories will be presented live at the event after last year’s decision to pre-tape eight competitive categories sparked backlash from industry professionals. This is also the first Oscars since Will Smith infamously slapped presenter Chris Rock during last year’s ceremony — a moment that has already been referenced in promotional videos for the event.

The Oscars are voted upon by the more than 10,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the course of a four-month-long period. Final voting for the 95th Academy Awards is held from March 2 to March 7.

When and where are the 2023 Oscars?

This year’s ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.

How can I watch the awards ceremony?

The 2023 Oscars will air live on ABC. The ceremony will also be available to watch through multiple streaming services (which often offer free trial subscriptions) including Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV. You can also visit ABC.com or use the ABC app to watch the ceremony by signing in with your cable provider. If you are viewing outside of the U.S., you can check out the international local listings on the Academy’s website.

Is there a pre-show?

Yes! There will be both a pre-show and an official lead-in broadcast ahead of Sunday’s awards ceremony.

First, ABC News will host On the Red Carpet Live: Countdown to Oscars 95, a pre-show event that airs from 1-4 p.m. ET/10 a.m.-1 p.m. PT on ABC. It will also be available to stream on the ABC News Live website from 1:30 p.m. EDT/10:30 a.m. PDT until the official start of the Oscars.

Then, Ashley Graham, Vanessa Hudgens, and Lilly Singh will join together to host the Countdown to the Oscars lead-in show, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT on ABC. The 90-minute special will spotlight the evening’s incredible nominees, performers, and presenters, as well as give fans a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood’s biggest night.

Who is hosting the 2023 Oscars?

Jimmy Kimmel will return as the host of this year’s Oscars after previously anchoring the show in 2017 (which featured the Moonlight/La La Land debacle) and again in 2018. “Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap,” the Jimmy Kimmel Live host said in a press statement. “Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no.”

In a promotional video ahead of the Academy Awards, Kimmel received his hosting orders from Top Gun: Maverick stars Jon Hamm and Charles Parnell. The pair noted that ABC was looking for someone who was both “unflappable and unslappable,” a nod to Smith striking Rock last year.

Who is nominated at the 2023 Oscars?

A24’s multiversal movie Everything Everywhere All at Once received the most nominations at the Academy Awards with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu). It is followed closely behind by Martin McDonagh’s drama The Banshees of Inisherin and the German war film All Quiet on the Western Front, which each scored nine nominations.

Other notable nods include Angela Bassett making history by becoming the first Marvel actor to earn a nomination for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as well as everyone in the Best Actor category — which includes Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, Paul Mescal, Bill Nighy, and Austin Butler — being first-time nominees. Who is presenting at the 2023 Oscars?

On Thursday, the Oscars announced that Halle Berry, Paul Dano, Cara Delevingne, Harrison Ford, Kate Hudson, Mindy Kaling, Eva Longoria, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Andie MacDowell, Elizabeth Olsen, Pedro Pascal, and John Travolta will all present at the awards ceremony.

The event’s final round of presenters join an all-star list that includes Halle Bailey, Antonio Banderas, Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Chastain, John Cho, Andrew Garfield, Hugh Grant, Danai Gurira, Salma Hayek Pinault, Nicole Kidman, Florence Pugh, Sigourney Weaver, Riz Ahmed, Emily Blunt, Glenn Close, Jennifer Connelly, Ariana DeBose, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Troy Kotsur, Jonathan Majors, Melissa McCarthy, Janelle Monáe, Deepika Padukone, Questlove, Zoe Saldaña, and Donnie Yen.

Ahmed previously announced the Oscars’ nominees with actress Allison Williams in January, while Dano, Weaver, and Connelly will perform double duty as presenters whose films are also nominated on the evening. Weaver made a splash in Avatar: The Way of Water — which is nominated for four awards including Best Picture, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects — while Connelly starred in Top Gun: Maverick, which is up for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), and Best Visual Effects. Dano is the only presenter that has two films — Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans and Matt Reeves’ The Batman — in awards contention this year.

Press:Elizabeth Olsen Talks Finding Humanity in an Axe Murder at SXSW Premiere, as Austin-Based Cast and Crew Cheer

Variety We’re living in a true crime boom in both scripted and unscripted television — but “Love & Death” director and exec producer Lesli Linka Glatter said she hopes her new HBO Max series will be seen as much more than that.

Sure, the series involves the true story of accused (but acquitted) axe murderer Candy Montgomery, played by Elizabeth Olsen. “There is a horrible true crime at the core of this, but we didn’t want it to be just a true crime story,” Glatter said Saturday in a panel discussion after the premiere of “Love & Death” at the South by Southwest festival. And the show doesn’t shy away from Montgomery’s actions. But “it’s really, things are not what they appear to be. You have to go deeper to see what’s really going on. We really tried to look at the ‘how’ and ‘why’ rather than the ‘what.’ How could this happen?”

The “Love & Death” premiere, held at Austin’s Paramount Theatre, served as a bit of a homecoming and reunion for the limited series’ cast and crew. “Love & Death” was filmed in the area, and is a story set in Texas (and even partly inspired by stories in Texas Monthly magazine). With an audience filled by actors and artisans who played a part in the production, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

“This is the perfect place to show our show for the very first time,” Glatter (who was born in Dallas) said before a screening of the premiere episode. “We made it here. It is a Texas story. I am a Texas human. To tell a story that is set here, shot here, I see so much of our Austin cast and crew here…. For me this is about a Texas town and the characters. I fell in love with all of them. But there is also a deep hole inside of those characters.”

When audiences last saw Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff in Disney’s May box office juggernaut “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” it certainly looked like Olsen’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was over. Definitively, actually: An entire castle collapsed on Wanda, a building brought down by her own powerful magic after she sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold — the evil book that had corrupted her, turning her into a nearly unbeatable villain for most of the movie.

For Olsen, 33, who burst into the movie world with 2011’s Sundance Film Festival sensation “Martha Marcy May Marlene” — and saw her profile skyrocket as Wanda (aka the Scarlet Witch) in six Marvel movies, starting with a mid-credits cameo in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and later the hit 2021 Disney+ TV series “WandaVision” — the character’s heel-turn into darkness took some adjustment. “Well, this is quite a leap from the woman that I’ve been playing!” she remembers thinking after learning she was to go malevolent in the Sam Raimi-directed sequel to “Doctor Strange.”

But she got into it. “At least in my experience, it’s been hard as a woman to express rage,” Olsen says. “It’s one of the most amazing feelings, because it’s so specific: You can know exactly why you’re angry.”

Over a long lunch on an unbearably hot September day near her home in Los Angeles, Olsen — who radiates tranquility — doesn’t disclose what makes her feel rage. “Oh, those are fun secrets to keep,” she says with a smile. “But I do have rage. I feel like the moment you, as an actor, reveal things about yourself that are kind of your ‘fuel,’ for lack of a better word, then your fuel’s exposed and it means less.”

In her years in the MCU, Olsen’s Wanda has lost her parents, her brother, her husband and her two sons, all of whom exist somewhere in the multiverse. She’s got a lot to be angry about. According to Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, Olsen’s skills are why Wanda’s arc has been so complex. “We only even would have dared attempt something like ‘WandaVision,’” Feige says, “because Lizzie is such an outstanding actor.”

Press: Elizabeth Olsen to Be Honored at Variety’s Power of Women Event

VARIETY: Variety is pleased to announce the honorees for its upcoming Power of Women issue and event on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The event, in partnership with Lifetime, celebrates the Power of Women honorees, who will appear on the cover of the issue, as well as the women profiled in the publication’s annual Women’s Impact Report, which highlights the top women working in entertainment.

This year’s honorees include Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton, who will be speaking about the importance of celebrating women and sharing their stories, as they do in their eight-part Apple TV+ documentary series “Gutsy,” which premiered on Sept. 9; Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay, who will highlight the importance of hiring female directors as they did throughout the production of “Queen Sugar” currently airing it’s seventh and final season on OWN; Extracurricular Productions president and the world’s youngest Nobel laureate Malala, who will be speaking about young people in film and television and supporting the Pillars Artist Fellowship; and award-winning actress, producer, and star of Marvel’s WandaVision and this summer’s blockbuster “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, Elizabeth Olsen, who will be speaking about her support of the The Rape Foundation/ Stuart House. The program will be hosted by Megan Stalter, the breakout star of “Hacks”.

Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, was chosen as one of one of this year’s stellar honorees. The Duchess’ cover will be postponed to a later date, out of respect for the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Similarly, she will not attend the Power of Women event in Los Angeles later this month.

As part of the evening, Lifetime will debut this year’s Stop Breast Cancer for Life PSA, featuring music icon Patti LaBelle in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The PSA spotlights the statistic that Black women are 41% more likely to die from breast cancer than any other group and urges all women to get their mammograms as early detection helps save lives.

As a Premiere Partner, Google will present the Social Impact Award to Jacqueline Martinez Garcel for the impact she has made as the CEO of the Latino Community Foundation, an independent statewide foundation with a mission to invest in Latino leaders throughout California.

“We’re excited to once again put the Power of Women spotlight on groundbreaking and accomplished female leaders,” said Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton. “We’re honored to salute those who are making a difference for equity, inclusion and excellence in our industry and making an enormous difference in the wider world through their philanthropic efforts. Press/Video: See Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen Break Character in Funny Doctor Strange 2 Bloopers

PEOPLE: A new gag reel shared exclusively with PEOPLE shows stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen in silly blooper moments behind the scenes of the Marvel movie, which becomes available on digital June 22.

Olsen, 33, laughs in one moment as she tries to be serious in character as the Scarlett Witch. While hoisted up in the air with wires, what appears to be leaves and debris flies onto her face, causing her to break during multiple takes.

Cumberbatch, 45, shows off his dance moves in several other instances, along with costars Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong and Xochitl Gomez, who also playfully danced on set.

“Nailed it!” says Cumberbatch at one point in the montage, fully dressed in his Doctor Strange costume.

Gomez joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe as America Chavez, a young teen with the rare ability to travel the multiverse, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She told PEOPLE one of her favorite parts about filming was working alongside stars Cumberbatch, Wong and Olsen, the latter of whom Gomez said she was “literally in awe” of on set.

She said her costars were super supportive during filming. “One of my first days, Benedict Wong knocked on my trailer door, gave me his phone number, and was just like, ‘I’m here for you if you ever want to talk. If you feel a little overwhelmed, I’m here for you,’ ” she recalled.

“That was really sweet because as a 14-year-old girl, I was just like, ‘Oh my God. This is a lot.’ It’s such a huge character and [it’s a] big responsibility,” she added. “It was really sweet to have that support.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on digital June 22, and on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD July 26.

Press: Elizabeth Olsen addresses her Marvel future after “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”

Actor says she’d be up for another ‘WandaVision’-style series

INDEPENDENT: Elizabeth Olsen has addressed her future as Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel franchise.

The actor has played the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since 2015, and won legions of fans following her appearance in WandaVision in January 2021.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Olsen said that she filmed new sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before WandaVision had even begun showing on Disney Plus.

She said: “I didn’t know the plot of Doctor Strange 2 until we were almost done with WandaVision. The odd thing is no one saw it who worked on Doctor Strange; we filmed it back-to-back.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she reflected on her Marvel future, saying she would consider returning for another standalone TV series if asked.

“I don’t know how big the plans actually are but I’m down for anything as long as there’s a good idea attached to it. I wanna know what people want next desperately ‘cause I think there are very clever and creative fan ideas.”

Olsen said the important thing with Wanda is that she gets to “continue to create a new aspect and some sort of change or shift in her as we move forward so it doesn’t become this repeat of something”.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be available to stream on Disney Plus from 22 June.

S Magazine: Authenticity, the unpretentious (even if conscious) ability to present an unvarnished image and likeness of oneself to the world, is one of the most appealing qualities of social media.

Especially for celebrities whose command over their public image has been greatly usurped by tabloid journalism and incessant paparazzi, social media may present an advantageous opportunity to win back a sense of ownership over their narratives while also expressing their individual truths. At the same time, however, these public displays of a more candid nature can become a perfect means of commodification, their naturalism a salable asset in a market that favours honest interactions.

Elizabeth Olsen, speaking over Zoom from Los Angeles, confirms that her short stint on Instagram was, by most measures, a business endeavour. “I’m not going to be coy about it: you try social media as an actor because there’s a financial gain—that’s why we are on these platforms,” she admits with tongue firmly planted in cheek. “I don’t feel comfortable selling things but thought I might as well give it a go. It didn’t make me feel great, even if it was something I believed in. I don’t think of myself as a salesperson or a personality, so it didn’t really suit me.” Where most Hollywood celebrities are steadfast in crafting an identity that juggles candor and commerce for the world to witness, it is refreshing to see an individual with such well-established cultural cachet recognize that this balancing act is more tedious than edifying.
