Press: Elizabeth Olsen & Charles Melton To Star In Todd Solondz’s ‘Love Child’ For ‘Past Lives’ Producers

DEADLINE – BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Infinity War) and Golden Globe nominee Charles Melton (May December) are set to star in Todd Solondz’s darkly comic new feature Love Child.

The story follows Misty who is stuck in a loveless marriage to a brutish husband. Junior, her precocious 11-year-old is her only consolation. When Easy, a handsome vagabond stranger, appears, Junior hatches a plan to get rid of his father so that his mother can marry him instead. But things end up backfiring, so Junior comes up with yet another plan, this one even more devious, and with more disastrous—and unexpected—consequences.

Killer Films (Past Lives), 2AM (Past Lives) Volition Media (Sam and Kate) and Gramercy Park Media (The Fabulous Four) are teaming with Rocket Science to bring the project to this week’s EFM.

Cindy Bru of Volition Media, Christine Vachon of Killer Films, David Hinojosa of 2AM and Ford Corbett of Gramercy Park Media will produce. Michael Jefferson, Adam Beasley, Atilla Yucer, Joshua Harris and Steven Farneth will executive-produce.

The film is fully financed by Volition Media and Gramercy Park Media. Rocket Science is handling international sales at EFM; Cinetic Media and WME co-represent U.S rights.

Todd Solondz said: “I am beyond excited to work with Elizabeth Olsen and Charles Melton on what will be a super fun and playful celebration of Hollywood movies.”

Elizabeth Olsen added: “I am a long-time fan of Todd’s work and to collaborate with him on this film is a true dream.”

Christine Vachon commented: “I’m thrilled to re-team with Todd Solondz on Love Child. We’ve worked together for many years now, starting with Happiness in the late 90s, and more recently with Wiener Dog. Love Child is yet another example of his singularity as a filmmaker – this dark, hilarious movie could only come from him.”

There has been some cast movement on this one over the years. A few years ago Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell were attached but it now takes a new form.

Olsen was most recently seen in limited series Love & Death and Riverdale actor Melton was seen in May December.

Olsen is represented by The Gersh Agency and Brillstein Entertainment Partners; Melton by CAA and 111 Media; Solondz by WME and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.

COMING SOON According to Screen Daily, Emmy nominee Elizabeth Olsen and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander have signed on to lead The Assessment cast for the upcoming sci-fi drama film. Olsen and Vikander will reportedly portray a couple living in a dystopian future where the world has been destroyed by climate change. In addition, Pitch Perfect alum Anna Kendrick is also rumored to be in talks to join the project, which is expected to begin filming this summer in Cologne, Germany.

Olsen gained worldwide recognition for her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For her performance in Disney+’s WandaVision series, she earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for best actress in a miniseries. She has been recently receiving critical acclaim for her leading role in Max’s true crime limited drama Love & Death, in which she played axe murderer Candy Montgomery.

As for Vikander, The Danish Girl actress’ most recent project was the HBO miniseries Irma Vep, which is an adaptation of Olivier Assayas’ 1996 French movie of the same name. Olsen will topline Love and Death, a limited series about a notorious murder in Texas in 1980. The series from Lionsgate Television counts David E. Kelley, Nicole Kidman and director Lesli Linka Glatter among its producing team.

Olsen will play Candy Montgomery, who was convicted of murdering her neighbor and friend, Betty Gore, with an ax.

“This is a gripping story about the frustrations and desires of two women in a small town that culminates in a terrible act of violence,” said HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey. “We are thrilled to be partnering with David, Lesli, Nicole, and Per [Saari] and incredibly fortunate to have Elizabeth at the center of our story to bring out all the layers of Candy that make this story so unforgettable.”

Love and Death is the second project about the Montgomery-Gore case to attract a high-profile star. Elisabeth Moss is attached to star in Candy, a limited series that’s in development at Universal Studio Group’s UCP from The Act’s Robin Veith and Nick Antosca.

Love and Death is based on the book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson and a two-part Texas Monthly series by the same authors, “Love & Death in Silicon Prairie.”

Press: ‘WandaVision’: Elizabeth Olsen Character Will Head To ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Pic; No Season 2 Planned Yet

DEADLINE: Despite the success of WandaVision on Disney+, Marvel Boss Kevin Feige said today at his first TCA that some series will get second or third seasons, while others will hand off to a feature film, and in the case of a WandaVision season 2, Feige has no plans yet. Instead Feige said that season 1 of WandaVision will hand off straight to the upcoming MCU feature sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

“I’ve been at Marvel too long to say a definite ‘No’ to anything as far as a second season of WandaVision,” said Feige.

“Lizzie Olsen will go from WandaVision to the Doctor Strange film,” said the Marvel Boss.

Feige said that Marvel is mapping out their Disney+ series like they’ve mapped out their MCU.

“The fun of the MCU is obviously all the crossover we can do between series, between films. So it will vary based on the story. Sometimes it will go into a season 2, sometimes it will go into a feature and back into a series,” said Feige.

“Sometimes, and yet to be announced, we’re thinking of and planning second seasons for some of the upcoming series,” he added.

Ms. Marvel, which is expected to debut on Disney+ later this year, will hand-off to the Captain Marvel 2 movie, Feige also emphasized today.

“The goal is to expand the fans of Marvel,” he said.

Press: Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Officially Announced; Will Also Star Elizabeth Olsen

COMIC BOOK – In addition to her own Disney+ series, the Scarlet Witch Elizabeth Olsen has also been confirmed to co-star in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is arguably one of the coolest film titles ever given in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Benedict Cumberbatch will, of course, return as the Sorcerer Supreme and the film has also been rumored to feature the return of Benedict Wong as Wong, although he wasn’t formally announced during tonight’s presentation.

While the film is still in the pre-production phase as it won’t debut until May 7, 2021, director Scott Derrickson did share a chilling tease, “We are going to make the first scary MCU film,” although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige did jokingly respond with “It’s gonna be PG-13 and you’re going to like it!”

DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS

Feige introduced the second film in the “Doctor Strange” franchise, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and called the director, Scott Derrickson, and star Benedict Cumberbatch to the stage to a rousing welcome.

In a surprise twist, Feige brought out Elizabeth Olsen, who also stars in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and they talked about how “WandaVision”—the Disney+ series that Olsen will star in as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch—connects directly to the feature-film storyline.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” hits theaters on May 7, 2021.

Press: Loki, Scarlet Witch, Other Marvel Heroes to Get Own TV Series on Disney Streaming Service

VARIETY – Disney is enlisting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the company prepares to launch its upcoming streaming service. The entertainment giant is in early development on an ambitious plan for a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These series will likely include shows centered on Loki and the Scarlet Witch, along with other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies.

Marvel and Disney had no comment.

There’s an important distinction from other Marvel small screen efforts, however. The actors who portrayed these heroes and villains in the Avengers films and their spin-offs, such as Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, are expected to play them in the streaming shows. Moreover, though sources close to the production are staying mum on the cost of the programming, the budgets are expected to be hefty rivaling those of a major studio productions. Each series is expected to include six to eight episodes. Marvel Studios will produce the shows and Kevin Feige, the guru of all things MCU, is expected to take a hands-on role in their development.

The pricey gamble with one of the crown jewels of the Disney film empire is a sign of how much the company has riding on its direct-to-consumer platform. As companies such as Netflix and Amazon continue to grow their user base, Disney is trying to find a way to establish a toehold in the streaming revolution upending Hollywood. The company has kept the details of the service close to the vest, beyond saying that it will likely cost less than Netflix and will launch at some point in late 2019.

Disney has already started to unwind its licensing deals in order to put as much premium content on the platform as possible. That’s meant that the company is forfeiting billions of dollars in profit, as well as shouldering the cost of developing the technology. The company has announced a number of high-profile projects, including a Star Wars series overseen by “Jungle Book” director Jon Favreau, a show based on “High School Musical,” and a live-action “Lady and the Tramp” film. The company also plans to offer several new releases when it launches, including its live-action “Dumbo” film and “Captain Marvel.”

Many of these projects are expensive bets. The Star Wars series will reportedly cost $100 million and the movies are expected to carry budgets north of $25 million. However, Disney has to spend big to make an impression. Netflix, its main rival, has 125 million subscribers globally and has lured top talent like Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story”), Kenya Barris (“Black-ish”), and Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”) to its platform with record-setting deals.
